It’s Friday, March 26th. I got a disturbing phone call this morning about one of our regulars. Cabo, who used to be one of our foster dogs from 11th Hour Rescue and who has been adopted for 2 years by Jen has tested positive for heartworm. Although heartworm is not contagious to other dogs and is transmitted by mosquitos, it is a verty serious parasite that attacks the heart. It is treatable and the prognosis is good, but it is a long road to recovery. Cabo will be in the hospital for a few days while being treated and will have to remain quiet for the next few months. That will be hard because her brothers, Jersey and Jeets, like to play with her. Heartworm can be prevented by taking the heartworm pill monthly. It is VERY important to get the dog tested before giving them the preventitive because if they have heartworm, the preventative can be deadly. There is a snap test, or sometime called a 3 in 1 (which tests for heartworm, Lyme and Ehrlicchia) which should be done once a year. I think a lot of us make the same decision not to give them their Frontline or Heartworm preventative year round, but I believe that we should continue to use both all year long. I can’t tell you how many ticks the groomer has picked off of dogs all winter. The ticks are not dying off like they used to during the winter months. We are seeing more and more Lyme disease with our furry friends then we used to in the almost 3 plus years of being here. I know it’s costly and that it’s sometimes a pain to remember to give them their meds, but it is important. If they should come down with Lyme disease or worse, heartworm, it is much more to deal with. Talk to your vet or you can even ask us any questions about the different preventatives. We care about your dogs like they are our own. Our hearts are with Jen and Cabo and we wish her a speedy recovery!!!

    Monday, March 23

Well, it’s the beginning of another week. It’s cold out, which I don’t know about everyone else, but I am really sick of the cold! When is it going to be warm? It’s spring for crying out loud. I think the dogs are even sick of the cold! Even the huskies!!!

The morning started off as usual. Keesha and Sequoia were picked up bright and early. The regular early birds came is soon afterwards- Ranger Danger, Nelson and Cora. They ran and played for quite a while as there was lots of room in the pen because the boarders were still in for breakfast. Ranger Danger and Nelson were having a barking match which I have to admit that first thing on a Monday morning isn’t exactly how you would like to start off the week!

Max and Soco were the first ones to arrive for the small dog side. The Beagle siblings have a good time running around the big pen having a lot of room all to themselves. Summer was the next to join them and she had a blast. She loves to run and it’s fun when they have company! Sugar, a rather large Sheltie joined us today for some playtime. She jumped right into the mix. Luke came in next and made his way into his “area” that he likes to call his own. Spifi, a very cute little pug, starting coming to us as of last week. This was only his second day and he has made himself very comfortable in the group and made friends very quickly.

Maris was the next large dog to come. He is so funny when he comes in. He runs straight to the pen and jumps on the wall announcing to his friends that he is here. Mocha was next into the group and is quite loud upon arrival. The 3 stooges also arrived and Jersey and Jeets are making their rounds as Cabo just strolls on in. She will make her rounds, but a lot slower then the other 2. Frodo the great strolled in next. He is so regal when he walks into the pen. Cody my sweet chocolate lab was next to arrive. He was so happy to join his friends. Marley the wheaton RAN into the pen. When I say ran- she ran. I don’t know who is familiar with Wheatons, but Marley is typical of the breed. Kinchley came in much later and charged thru the gate past all of the others. I picked up Lana from home and brought her to the club so she could have a playdate with all of her friends. When I arrived at Lana’s house, she was waiting for me outside with her brother Pugsley. She was so excited to see my car because she knows that I am the vehicle to her happiness! lol Buddy, who is my buddy, came today too. I don’t get to see him that much anymore because he comes on days that I am not here. He was so happy to see me as I was to see him. That is what makes this job so great, is that no matter how bad of a day I am having, all of the dogs allow me to forget about it and make me feel so much better. Dixie and Bentley were the last ones to arrive for the large dogs and Bentley made his way in as if he was saying, “Hey guys! I am finally here! Aren’t you so excited!” Dixie is a lot more laid back. She is just like, “Hey. I’m here. And that’s that.”

Georgee was the next to arrive for the other side. She made her way in just as Chelsea made her way in. Chelsea was greeted by her buddies and Rudy jumped all over her. Fidel Castro, yes, Fidel Castro also came today. He came for a bath, but he did get some play time. Rudy and Daisy the Labradoodles also came today for some playtime. They joined in all the others as everyone ran around and played.

It is fun to watch as the dogs all mingle. I have had people ask what the dogs “do” all day. Do they play with toys? Don’t they fight? I politely tell anyone that dogs are dogs. They have each other to rely on. They have each other to play with. We don’t put toys out because they will fight over toys. If you have 10 dogs and 20 tennis balls, inevitably, they will fight over 1 ball. That is why we don’t have as many fights. I can’t say it never happens, but considering the amount of dogs we get, there really aren’t fights. Dogs will be dogs and we allow them to be just that. We just make sure that they don’t get out of control and that their time here is the best that it can be.

Ok, so I am a bad mommy. Last night I had to take all 3 of my huskies to the emergency vet because they got into something they shouldn’t have. I had to leave my guys home for a few hours last night and they were SO BAD!!! Yes, it is true. My guys are just as bad as everyone else- even though they are at the Club more then most dogs! lol When I arrived home last night at around 9:00, I couldn’t belive my eyes. Frankie (the FREAK!) decided to take the contents of the bathroom into the living room and chew them apart. He managed to chew my toothpaste (just the tube and not the paste), my 2 toothbrushes, my lotion and I don’t know what else. There was plastic pieces spread from one end of the room to the other. When picking up the pieces, I saw that Gabi was laying on top of an empty bottle of her medication. She is on a drug called Reconcile to help her with her anxiousness. Well, they ate whatever pills were in the bottle. I wasn’t sure exactly how much was in there, but I knew it was more then what it should have been. I went back and forth in my head as to what I should do. I called my friend Laura, who is also a dog trainer, and asked her what to do. She recommended calling the emergency place. I did just that. They were very nice when I called. The receptionist asked me a bunch of questions and then told me to hold on. Then the doctor came on and asked a few more questions. She gave me my options and I decided to take them in. Not knowing who the culprit or culprits were made it more difficult. I did not know if it was just Frankie who ate the pills or if Gabi helped. I didn’t think Johnny had anything to do with it because he was in the other room and usually stays clear of trouble, but I wasn’t sure. I brought all 3 of them to the emergency place. They are right up the road from me. Laura came with me because handling 3 dogs is a bit much, especially because Frankie doesn’t like the vet. The first thing we had to do was to induce vomitting. We did that for Frankie and Gabi. They used an eye drop to induce it, which my guys were not very happy with. Frankie let the vet do it the first time, but after a few minutes of not throwing up, she had to do it again. That was when Frankie began to snarl. I held him as she put the drops in again, and again and yet again. After the 4th attempt, he finally puked. GROSS!!! There was all kinds of interesting things in there- lots of plastic, my pink toothbrushes, etc. We couldn’t tell if the pills were in there b/c they are chewable. Gabi still didn’t throw up after 6 attempts so we had to give her an injection. She finally surrenedered at that point. She didn’t have as much plastic as Frankie, but hers was still interesting to say the least. Being that the puke couldn’t really tell us who the guilty dog was, we decided to treat them both with charcoal. That was fun too! The vet gave it to them with some cat food and they ate it. It took a little while, but they finished all of the charcoal. Their tongues were black! lol They weren’t showing any signs of real distress, so I took them home and was told what to look for- restlessness, irritablity, seizures, etc. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep very well. Luckily, they all seem to be fine. The vet was great and I would recommend them to anyone. They are on Ridge Road in Lyndhurst. It is North Jersey Veterinary Emergency Services (NJVES). The bill was reasonable and I am very happy that I have insurance for the huskies! The lesson here is that even though we think we are careful, we can still make mistakes. I am just happy that my guys are ok and for the future, they will be put back in their crates. That is where Suki was and therefore was not at any risk.

Friday the 13th…….was not so scary!

It was a good day here at Club Barks. The regulars were all here. We had Winnie ( a Goldendoodle) who hasn’t been to the Club in a very long time. Winnie (The Pooh) came in like a rocket who literally had a blast making new friends. Upon entrance, Winnie met Sequoia, Nelson, Mocha, Maris, and Jesse. They were all very inviting to their “clique”. Once they all settled in, some of the other regulars came- Mavi (our sweetie of a rottie), Chewie (black lab mix), Kaiba (the CRAZY Wheaton), Milo ( our cute spotted hound puppy), Max (the yellow lab we have referred to as Armstrong b/c he wore an Armstrong collar for a while), Sam Sam, Cookie (monster), Maverick (the crybaby German Shepard), Juno (Chocolate Lab who we have called JunBug), Carly (the Golden Retriever who loves to come and see all of her friends- could care less about us), Lex (the goofy Hound mix who we pick up so he can come and play) and who loves to play with Lana (our goofy and cute little Boxer puppy) and Milo, Max( a mix who is new to the Club and still getting used to everybody), and finally The 3 Amigos- Sashi, Shayne and Bailey! That was just one group guys- there’s a whole other group. The group that I listed right above is our Crazy dog group who consists of the large and more active dogs. There are mostly young ones in this group who need to be watched closely. They literally bounce off the walls and spend the day running around and jumping all over each other.

The other group is our “calmer” group which is a mixture of all sizes and shapes. Keesha and Sierra are here bright and early- before many of the others arrive. They were waiting patiently in the pen for the others to come. Gemma was the first one to arrive. Gemma is one of our tiniest dogs (a yorkie) who is I would say about maybe 5 pounds soaking wet ( and who did get wet today because she got groomed). Weighing in at the whole 5 pounds, don’t let this little girl’s size speak for her- she has A BIG attitude! lol Pumpkin (a new little Dachsund who also was getting groomed today), Summer (I wish it were at least Spring for crying out loud!), Amber (our little old Visla who started coming back recently after a few health problems), Lola (the cutest English Bulldog puppy who has so much fun when she is here), Leo (the CUTEST Bernese Mountain dog puppy who I am going to steal! lol), Chelsea (my sweetie), Mitch (the Cairn Terrier who runs to the back), Joey (our little JoeJoe), Blanche (or Blanchey), Callie (our little Sheltie who is finally getting more comfortable coming in), Roxy (goldendoodle who is taking puppy classes at the Institute and getting used to the Club), and finally, Maddie (the cute little cockapoo puppy who is also having fun at the Club). The “calm” guys are really not “calm”, but they don’t run into the walls like the “crazies” do.

Both groups get along great and have a blast. So thankfully, this Friday the 13th was not cursed and was a nice day!

Today was Cheech’s 1st birthday. He spent the enitire day with all his friends (Cora, Summer, Judy and Ranger to name a few) at Club Barks, or CBs as Cheech likes to call it. Cheech had the best birthday. He had fun all day, came home and had a pet-safe birthday cookie and some of his Bully stick that Alyse gave him and then fell asleep. Anyway. . . thanks to everyone at CBs for making Cheech’s birthday a dog-gone good one!

    Another day at the club

It’s Monday, March 9th, a typical start of the week. The morning starts with the regulars. Steve picked up Keesha and Sequoia first thing in the morning. The next to arrive was Ranger Danger and then Nelson, who was quite happy to see his friend Ranger Danger. They romped around for a few minutes because they had the pen all to themselves- lots of room to run around. They were slamming into the walls and having a blast. Mocha was the next to come. She was full of energy when she entered the pen. She went to check out Ranger Danger and Nelson, who all know each other quite well and love each other.

Cora was the next to arrive. She was the first one to show up for the small dog side. She went in the pen and waited for one of her friends to arrive. Summer came in a few minutes later and they were jumping all over each other ecstatic to see a playmate. If dogs could talk we can only imagine what they would say to each other…”Hey Cora”. “Hey Summer” “How was your weekend?” “I dunno, it was good I guess because I got to spend time with my mom and day. They even took me for a nice walk- it was so nice out this weekend! Now it’s raining- I hate the rain. My parents always complain when I get wet- they tell me I smell like a dog- well, duh! I am a dog!”

The morning went fast. They all started coming- Big Jessie (the biggest Golden Retreiver), Spooky (the white boxer- hence the name Spooky), Silky (the sleak and pretty Weinmariner), Frodo (the protective German Shepard), Kaya and Scout (brother and sister who are new to the club), Jersey, Cabo and Jeets (also known as the 3 stooges and who Cabo and Jeets were both foster dogs at Club Barks who have been adopted and are now siblings of Jersey), Cookie ( the big and fluffy Sheepdog who has to stop at the counter on the way in and out for treats”, Luke ( the Chocolate Lab whose tail has been called a weapon), Chelsea ( our shy fox-looking sweetie who is adored by Rudy, Judy and Suki- Steve and my dogs), Samson ( aka Sam Sam, another one of our protective Shepards), Georgee (a petite little yellow lab who everyone thinks is still a puppy even though she isn’t”, Cheech ( our little shih-poo who thinks he’s the size of a lab), Cody (a Chocolate Lab whi recently got neutered and is very happy to be able to playy again), Madonna ( out little mixed mutt who has a lot of attitude for a 6 month old), Liah (our very timid Wheaton Terrier who is nothing like the other Wheatons that come here), Lana (a 6 month old Boxer puppy who can’t wait to get here), and last but not least Dixie and Bentley her and sister whose mommy is one of the trainers at Club Barks Intitute).

An introduction to the cast at the club….
